چکیده

In a project to classify livestock grazing intensity using participatory geographic information systems (PGIS), we encountered the problem of how to synthesize PGIS-based maps of livestock grazing intensity that were prepared separately by local experts. We investigated the utility of evidential belief functions (EBFs) and Dempster’s rule of combination to represent classification uncertainty and integrate the PGIS-based grazing intensity maps. These maps were used as individual sets of evidence in the application of EBFs to evaluate the proposition that “This area or pixel belongs to the high, medium, or low grazing intensity class because the local expert(s) says (say) so”. The class-area-weighted averages of EBFs based on each of the PGIS-based maps show that the lowest degree of classification uncertainty is Address for correspondence: Jane Bemigisha, International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Hengelosestraat 99, P.O. This criterion, together with local landscape attributes of livestock use may be considered as an appropriate standard measure for grazing intensity. The maps of integrated EBFs of grazing intensity show that classification uncertainty is high when the local experts apply at least two mapping criteria together. This study demonstrates the usefulness of EBFs to represent classification uncertainty and the possibility to use the EBF values in identifying and using criteria for PGIS-based mapping of livestock grazing intensity.

Belief fuctions: theory and algorithms

The subject of this thesis is belief function theory and its application in different contexts. Belief function theory (also known as Dempster-Shafer theory) is a mathematical framework for describing quantified beliefs held by an agent. It can be interpreted as a generalization of Bayesian probability theory and makes it possible to distinguish between different types of uncertainty. In partic...

On the Complexity of the Graphical Representation and the Belief Inference in the Dynamic Directed Evidential Networks with Conditional Belief Functions

Directed evidential graphical models are important tools for handling uncertain information in the framework of evidence theory. They obtain their efficiency by compactly representing (in)dependencies between variables in the network and efficiently reasoning under uncertainty. This paper presents a new dynamic evidential network for representing uncertainty and managing temporal changes in dat...

Considering Uncertainty in Modeling Historical Knowledge

Simplifying and structuring qualitatively complex knowledge, quantifying it in a certain way to make it reusable and easily accessible are all aspects that are not new to historians. Computer science is currently approaching a solution to some of these problems, or at least making it easier to work with historical data. In this paper, we propose a historical knowledge representation model takin...

BeliefOWL: An Evidential Representation in OWL Ontology

The OWL is a language for representing ontologies but it is unable to capture the uncertainty about the concepts for a domain. To address the problem of representing uncertainty, we propose in this paper, the theoretical aspects of our tool BeliefOWL which is based on evidential approach. It focuses on translating an ontology into a directed evidential network by applying a set of structural tr...

Inundation in urban areas due to dens storm has created many problems for all cities thorough the world. Urban flood hazard zoning may provide useful information for dealing with contingency and alleviating risk and loss of life and property. Therefore, to management of urban area, flood relief measures and prioritized to address flooding problems should be identified areas that are more aff...
